NAGPUR: Bowing to growing pressure from corporators, the civic administration is actively considering scrapping a contract it had awarded to a private firmwhich allegedly failed to provide proper maintenance of street lights. Since 2003, street lights in Nagpur are being maintained by Vibrant Infotech, which had apparently assured the Nagpur Municipal Corporation of reduced cost through power and energy saving devices in circuit boxes.
As per the agreement the NMC and the firm were to share revenue from the savingwhile the corporation paid a fixed cost towards and maintenance andrepairs. However, Vibrant's poor performance only came to light last month, when the civic body voted to cancel the contract. A similar resolution was passed against the firm last year. On Wednesday, BJP corporators met mayor NareshGawande to voice similar demand.
"The corporation's general body has already decided to scrap the contract. We are not satisfied with the firm's performance," Gawande told TOI. Dilip Chaudhari, a Congress corporator, said the firm had failed miserably in bringing energy efficiency and proper maintainance of streetlights. Last year, after the corporators demanded cancellation of the contract, the NMC asked the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency to audit the firm's performance.
"The firm did help us to save in power bills, but it did not stand up to our expectation. As per the agreement the firm was expected to bring about reduction in saving by 30 per cent," a civic official pointed out. However the firm was unable to meet its target, he said. However Nitin Tatiya, Vibrant's director blamed the NMC for reneging on contract. "In the last three years we have not received a single paisa toward additional maintenance cost. When we signed the contract the number of street lights was about 68,000. Now it is more than 80,000. TheNMC expects us to run a car but is not providing us with petrol." The firm's proprietor Sunil Raisoni said: "We are ready for jointinspections."
